الأَرضُthe earth تَضحَكُlaughs وَالسماءُwhile the sky بِضِدِّهاin contrast to it
وَالقُضبُand the boughs تَرقُصُdance فيin غَلائِلَgauzy robes وَردِهاtheir roses
The earth laughs, while the sky does the opposite;
And the boughs dance in gauzy robes of their roses.
وَالراحُand the wine قَدhas راحَتcome بِهاwith it فَتّانَةٌa bewitching woman
تَفتَرُّsmiles عَنrevealing مِثلِthe like of الَّذيwhat فيin عِقدِهاher necklace
And a bewitching woman has come bearing the wine;
Her smile reveals the like of what is in her necklace.
فَكَأَنَّهاso it seems فيin طَعمِهاits taste مِنfrom ريقِهاher saliva
وَكَأَنَّهاand it seems فيin لَونِهاits color مِنfrom خَدِّهاher cheek
So in taste it seems to come from her saliva,
And in color it seems to come from her cheek.
فَاِشرَبso drink عَلىbeside الشَجَرِthe trees الَّتيwhose أَوراقُهاtheir leaves
ماthat which لَيسَis not يُعرَفُdistinguished سَبطَهاtheir smooth ones مِنfrom جَعدِهاtheir curled ones
So drink beside the trees, among whose leaves
The smooth cannot be told from the curled;
فَالسُحبُfor the clouds تَطرَبُdelight بِالأَحاديثِin the tales الَّتيthat

For the clouds delight in the tales that
Their thunder’s night companion was composing at dusk.
