ياO أَيُّهاyou المُتَنَصِّحوناprofessed advisers
كَمhow often تَكذِبونَyou lie وَتَأثَموناand you sin
O you who profess to counsel,
How often you lie and sin!
البَدرُthe full moon دونَbelow حَبيبِناour beloved
لَكِنَّكُمbut you لاnot تَنظُروناyou look
The full moon falls short of our beloved,
But you do not look.
فَتَأَمَّلوهُso contemplate him فَإِنand if يَكُنhe is
بِخِلافِcontrary to ماwhat قَدindeed تَزعَموناyou claim
So look closely at him; and if he is
Contrary to what you claim,
فَتَنَصَّلواthen disavow مِمّاfrom what جَرىhas issued
مِنfrom لَفظِكُمyour speech فيهِabout him وَفيناand about us
Then retract what has come
From your lips about him and us.
