O you who, whenever a friend visits you,

    honor him to the utmost,

And you whose face, to drinking companions,

is a garden, with a cloud in your palm,

And you, the man who every day

does his own wealth an injustice—

    by my uncle, al-Murtada Ali,

why did you not rescue the turban?

You are not one under legal restraint,

such that reproach and blame should fall away.

So, brother, if you weave praise,

you clothe its brocade in care.

You have loosed your tongue about it,

and sometimes blame is spread abroad.

    So if you felt, when

you said what you said, any regret,

then let your gifts to me be greetings,

and leave them aside in peace.

Damietta is worth too little to me

for Doomsday to erupt over its fine linen.
