أَياO مَنyou who تَناقَصَhas dwindled مِنهُin him الحَياءُa sense of shame
وَلاand not يَتَناقَصُdwindles مِنهُin him الوَفاءُloyalty
O you whose sense of shame has dwindled,
yet whose loyalty does not dwindle:
لِأَيَّةِfor what حالٍreason جُفيناwe were shunned وَماand never
عَهِدناكَwe have known you يُثنيكَturns you away عَنّاfrom us جَفاءُcoldness
For what reason have we been shunned, when never
have we known you to be turned from us by coldness?
كَذاsuch are الأَتقِياءَthe pious كَذاsuch are الأَنقِياءُthe pure
كَذاsuch are الأَصفِياءُthe true friends كَذاsuch are الأَقرِباءُthe kinsmen
Such are the pious, such are the pure!
Such are true friends, such are kinsmen!
أَناخَتsettled عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver عِلَّةٌan illness
فَعادَso came to visit الرِجالِthe men وَعادَand came to visit النِساءُthe women
An illness settled upon my liver,
so men came to visit, and women came too.
وَأَنتَand you عَلىdespite قُربِthe closeness of ماwhat بَينَناis between us
كَأَنَّكَas though you were فيin البُعدِdistance مِنّيfrom me السَماءُthe sky
And you, despite the closeness between us,
are as far from me as the sky.
فَإِنso if أَناI مُتُّI die فَلاthen no حيلَةٌremedy
وَإِنand if أَناI عِشتُI live فَعِنديthen I have الجَزاءُrepayment
So if I die, there is no remedy;
and if I live, I shall repay you.
