He sang, and with his voice made the Franks weep.
And he remained a boor, forever turning his back.
مُلهٍan entertainer أَتاناcame to us وَوَقتُناwhile our time حَسَنٌpleasant
فَعادَso it became مَنfrom حَسَّthe sound of عودِهِhis lute سَمِجاunpleasant
An entertainer came to us while our time was pleasant;
then it grew unpleasant at the sound of his lute.
وَكانَand was مَحرورُthe hot-blooded one of شُربِناour drinking party حَرِكاًlively
فَحينَthen when وافاهُreached him بَردُهُhis chill فُلجاhe was paralyzed
The hot-blooded man in our drinking party was lively;
but when the singer’s chill reached him, he was paralyzed.
فَلَمso did not نَزَلwe cease طولَthroughout يَومِناour day مَعَهُwith him
نَدخُلُwe enter فيinto رَأسِهِhis head إِذاwhenever خَرَجاhe went out of tune
So all day long we continued with him,
getting into his head whenever he went out of tune.
