زارَني في أَوائِلِ الشَهرِ بَدري
وَالثُرَيّاand the Pleiades كَأَنَّهاas though it were تاجُa crown دُرِّpearls
وَالثُرَيّا كَأَنَّها تاجُ دُرِّ
At the month's beginning, my full moon came to me,
My full moon visited me in the month's first days,
while the Pleiades seemed a crown of pearls;
And the Pleiades seemed a crown of pearls.
وَكَأَنَّand as though النُجومَthe stars نَردٌdice كِبارٌlarge
وَكَأَنَّ النُجومَ نَردٌ كِبارٌ
وَكَأَنَّand as though السَماءَthe sky رِقعَةُan expanse بَحرِsea
وَكَأَنَّ السَماءَ رِقعَةُ بَحرِ
the stars seemed like great dice,
And the stars seemed large dice,
and the sky an expanse of sea;
And the sky seemed an expanse of sea.
وَكَأَنَّand as though المَجَرَّthe Milky Way جِسمُa body لُجَينِsilver
وَكَأَنَّ المَجَرَّ جِسمُ لُجَينِ
وَكَأَنَّand as though الهِلالَthe crescent moon زَورَقُa skiff تِبرِunworked gold
وَكَأَنَّ الهِلالَ زَورَقُ تِبرِ
the Milky Way seemed a body of silver,
And the Milky Way seemed a body of silver,
and the crescent moon a skiff of pure gold.
And the crescent moon seemed a skiff of gold.
فَاِعتَنَقناthen we embraced ماparticle reinforcing 'between' بَينَbetween صَحوٍsobriety وَسَكرٍand intoxication
فَاِعتَنَقنا ما بَينَ صَحوٍ وَسَكرٍ
وَاِفتَرَقناand we parted ماparticle reinforcing 'between' بَينَbetween صُبحٍmorning وَفَجرِand dawn
وَاِفتَرَقنا ما بَينَ صُبحٍ وَفَجرِ
We embraced, somewhere between sobriety and intoxication,
Then we embraced between sobriety and intoxication,
and parted, somewhere between morning light and dawn.
And we parted between morning and dawn.
