ماwhat بالُcondition طَيفِphantom خَيالٍvision كانَused to يَطرُقُناvisit us by night
قَدalready شَمَّرَتhave drawn back مِنهُfrom it أَذيالُskirts الزِياراتِthe visits
What ails the phantom vision that used to visit us by night,
now that the skirts of visitation have drawn back from it?
إِنif كانَit was قَدalready حالَchanged عَماfrom what كُنتُI used to أَعهَدُهُknow it
وَشَقَّand tore عَنout of مَلَلٍweariness ذَيلَthe hem المَوَدّاتِaffections
If it has changed from what I once knew it to be,
and, out of weariness, torn the hem of affection,
فَسَوفَthen shall أَحتالُI devise a means فيin صَبرٍpatience يُخَلِّصُنيfrees me
بِجاهِهِthrough its influence مِنfrom مَخاليبِthe talons الصَباباتِpassionate longings
then I shall seek a patience that will free me,
through its power, from the talons of passionate longing.
