أَياO أَيُّهاO you البَدرُthe full moon الَّذيwho ماnot أَظُنُّهُI suppose him
رُئيhas been seen مِثلُهُhis equal لاneither فيin السَماءِheaven وَلاnor الأَرضِthe earth
O full moon, I do not believe
your equal has ever been seen in heaven or on earth.
غَدَرتَyou betrayed فَغادَرتَso you left القِلىhatred مُتَعَدِّياًoverstepping bounds
يَجورُacts unjustly فَيَبكيso weeps مِنهُbecause of it بَعضيpart of me عَلىfor بَعضيpart of me
You betrayed me, leaving hatred to overstep its bounds;
it oppresses me, so one part of me weeps for another.
وَأَوحَشتَand you made lonely مِنof رُؤياكَseeing you طَرفيmy eye وَلَمand did not يَزَلcease
يُنتَزِّهُهُtakes delight in it فيin وَردِroses وَجنَتِكَyour cheek الغَضِّfresh
And you left my eye bereft of seeing you, though it had never ceased
taking delight in the fresh roses of your cheek.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are تَخشىyou fear مِنof لِسانِthe tongue بُكائِهِits weeping
فَماthen no الرَأيَcourse of action إِلّاexcept أَنto تُبَرطِلَyou bribe بِالغَمضِwith sleep
So if you fear the tongue of its weeping,
then your only course is to bribe it with sleep.
