مَتىwhen يَشتَفيwill be healed قَلبُthe heart of الدُنُوِّnearness مِنَfrom البُعدِseparation
وَيَضحَكُand laugh باكيone who weeps for الوَصلِunion مِنat ضاحِكِone who laughs in الصَدِّrejection
When will the heart of nearness be healed of separation,
and he who weeps for union laugh at him who laughs in rejection?
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain of ذِلَّتيmy abasement فيin يَدِthe hand of الهَوىpassion
وَقِلَّةَand the scarcity of أَنصاريmy allies عَلىagainst ظالِمِtyrannical الوَجدِlonging
To God I complain of my abasement in the hand of passion,
and of how few allies I have against tyrannical longing.
فَياso, O شُؤمَill luck of بَختيmy fortune كَيفَhow حَتّىto the point that اِستَرَقَّنيhe enslaved me
مِنَfrom among الناسِpeople مَولىًa master لاnot يَرِقُّfeels pity عَلىfor عَبدِa slave
So, woe to my fortune! How came I to be enslaved
by a master among men who has no pity for a slave?
