حَلَلتَyou unfastened عُرىthe bonds of إِخائِكَyour brotherhood مِنfrom إِخائيmy brotherhood
وَمِلتَand you turned إِلىtoward اِبنِthe son of مَصّاصِthe sucker of الدِماءِblood
You unfastened your bonds of brotherhood from mine,
And turned toward the bloodsucker's son.
فَلَمyet ... not أُطلِقI loosen سِباقَthe tether of الَتبِreproach (probable reading) مِنّيfrom me
غَداةَon the morning نَشَرتَyou spread أَجنِحَةَthe wings of الجَفاءِestrangement
Yet I did not loosen the tether of my reproach,
On the morning you spread the wings of estrangement,
لِأَنَّكَbecause you بِعتَsold ضِرغاماًa lion بِكَلبٍfor a dog
وَآثَرتَand you preferred الحَضيضَthe depths عَلىover السَماءِthe sky
For you sold a lion for a dog,
And preferred the depths to the sky.
وَلَمand ... not يَخجَلfeel ashamed صُدودُكَyour turning away مِنbefore وِصاليmy closeness
وَلَمand ... not يَستَحيfeel ashamed غَدرُكَyour treachery مِنbefore وَفائيmy loyalty
And your turning away felt no shame before my closeness,
And your treachery felt no shame before my loyalty.
فَلَمّاso when لَمnot يَكُنthere was مِنكَfrom you اِعتِذارٌan apology
أَسَمتُI sent to graze القَلبَthe heart فيin مَرعىthe pasture of العَزاءِconsolation
So when no apology came from you,
I sent my heart to graze in consolation's pasture,
وَقُلتُand I said أَروضُI tame بِالسُلوانَwith forgetfulness قَلبيmy heart
فَلَستُfor I am not أَلامَto be blamed إِنif داوَيتُI treated دائيmy ailment
And I said: I will tame my heart with forgetfulness—
For I am not to blame if I treat my ailment.
