إِذاif اِحتَجَبَshuts himself away الصَديقُthe friend عَنِfrom الصَديقِthe friend
إِذا اِحتَجَبَ الصَديقُ عَنِ الصَديقِ
بِلاwithout سَبَبٍa reason فَذاكَthen that مِنَof القُعوقِingratitude (apparently intended: العقوق)
بِلا سَبَبٍ فَذاكَ مِنَ القُعوقِ
If a friend shuts himself away from a friend
When a friend shuns a friend
for no reason, then that is ingratitude.
Without reason, that is estrangement
وَلَمand did not أَقضيI fulfill لِإِنسانٍfor a person حُقوقُهاher/its rights
وَلَم أَقضي لِإِنسانٍ حُقوقُها
إِذاif ماemphatic particle كانَhe was لاnot يَقضيhe fulfills حُقوقيmy rights
إِذا ما كانَ لا يَقضي حُقوقي
Nor have I given anyone their due
I do not fulfill anyone's rights
if they do not give me mine.
If they do not fulfill my rights
إِذاif الأَبوابُthe doors صارَbecame لَهاfor them اِنغلاقٌa closing
إِذا الأَبوابُ صارَ لَها اِنغلاقٌ
قَنِعناwe were content بِالسَلامِwith a greeting عَلىon الطَريقِthe road
قَنِعنا بِالسَلامِ عَلى الطَريقِ
If the doors have become closed,
When doors close
we are content with a greeting on the road.
We make do with greeting on the path
