أَفضىturned إِلىto ذِكريَmentioning me شَيطانُa devil
وَماand did not دَرىknow أَنّيthat I am سُلَيمانُSolomon
A devil has turned to speaking of me,
And did not know that I am Solomon.
وَأَصلُand the root هَذاthis حَسَدٌenvy مِنهُfrom him ليtoward me
عَلىfor قَوافٍrhymes هِيَthey are تيجانُcrowns
And the root of this is his envy of me
For rhymes that are crowns.
فَهَلso, have...? رَأَيتُمyou have seen قَبلَهُbefore him شاعِراًa poet
يَعيبُfinds fault with شِعراًpoetry وَهوَthough it is طَنّانُresonant
So, have you seen a poet before him
Who faults poetry though it resounds?
وَكُلُّand every جُزءٍpart مِنهُof it كُرّاسَةٌa booklet
وَرُبَّand many a بَيتٍverse مِنهُof it ديوانُa poetry collection
And every part of it is a booklet,
And many a verse of it is a whole collection of poems.
يُبديreveals لَكَto you الأَمثالُthe maxims فيهِwithin it كَماjust as
يُبديreveals لَكَto you الأَزهرَthe blossoms بُستانُa garden
It reveals maxims to you therein, just as
A garden reveals blossoms to you.
لَوif كانَit were إِنساناًa human being لَماwould not عابَهُhave faulted it
عَلىfor قَبيحٍanything ugly مِنهُin it إِنسانُa human being
Were it human, it would not be faulted
By any human for anything ugly in it.
