وَسابِقٍ مِنَ الجِيادِ أَدهَمِ

وَسابِقٍ مِنَ الجِيادِ أَدهَمِ

مُحَجَّلٍ أَغَرَّ نَهدٍ مُفعَمِ

مُحَجَّلٍ أَغَرَّ نَهدٍ مُفعَمِ

And a swift, jet-black racer among fine steeds,

White-stockinged, white-blazed, powerfully built and full-bodied,

كَأَنَّهُ مُنتَعِلٌ بِأَنجُمٍ

كَأَنَّهُ مُنتَعِلٌ بِأَنجُمٍ

وَوَجهُهُ مُنَقَّطٌ بِدَرهَمِ

وَوَجهُهُ مُنَقَّطٌ بِدَرهَمِ

As though he were shod with stars,

And his face were marked with a dirham coin,

أَسرَعَ مِن هَجرٍ إِلى مُتَيَّمٍ

أَسرَعَ مِن هَجرٍ إِلى مُتَيَّمٍ

تَرقى العُلا مِنهُ بِأَقوى سُلَّمِ

تَرقى العُلا مِنهُ بِأَقوى سُلَّمِ

Swifter than abandonment reaching a lovesick man—

Through him you ascend to glory by the strongest ladder.
