أَذهَبتُI gilded فِضَّةَthe silver خَدِّهِof his cheek بِعِتابيwith my reproach
وَنَثَرتُand I scattered دُرَّthe pearls دُموعِهِof his tears بِخِطابيwith my words
I gilded the silver of his cheek with my reproach,
I wasted the silver of his cheek with my reproach,
And scattered the pearls of his tears with my words.
And scattered the pearls of his tears with my words.
ظَبيٌa gazelle جَعَلتُI made كِناسَهُhis covert قَلبيmy heart فَلَمso I did not
أَعقِلthink لِصَيدِof hunting سِواهُother than him قَبلَbefore طِلابيmy pursuit
A gazelle—I made my heart his covert, so I did not
A gazelle - I made its dwelling my heart, so I had
Think of hunting another before pursuing him.
No sense left for hunting any other game before my yearning.
فَزَهاthen he grew haughty عَلَيَّtoward me وَمَرَّand he passed يَسحَبُdragging ذَيلَهُhis hem
بَينَamid التَكَبُّرِhaughtiness مِنهُon his part وَالإِعجابِand self-admiration
Then he grew haughty toward me and passed, trailing his hem,
So it swaggered against me, dragging its tail
Amid his haughtiness and self-admiration.
Between its pride in itself and my admiration.
فَحَلَفتُso I swore أَنّيthat I إِنif ظَفِرتُI won access بِخَدِّهِto his cheek
لَأُرَصِّعَنَّI would surely stud مُدامَهُhis wine بِحَبابيwith my bubbles
So I swore that, if I won access to his cheek,
So I swore that if I gained possession of his cheek,
I would surely stud his wine with my bubbles.
I would stud its smoothness with my kisses.
