وَلَمّاand when تَبَدّىappeared الصُبحُthe morning فيin أَثَرِthe wake of الفَجرِdawn
وَسارَand departed الدُجىthe darkness عَنّاfrom us بِأَنجُمِهِwith its stars الزُهرِthe shining ones
And when morning appeared in the wake of dawn,
When dawn appeared in the wake of daybreak,
and darkness departed from us with its shining stars,
And darkness withdrew from us with its bright stars,
عَدَلتُI turned إِلىtoward الحَمّامِthe bathhouse عَنaway from مَنهَجِthe path of الكَرىsleep
وَجِئتُand I came إِلَيهِto it هارِباًfleeing مِنfrom يَدِthe hand of السَكَرِintoxication
I turned toward the bathhouse, away from the path of sleep,
I headed to the baths, leaving the path of worries,
and came to it fleeing the hand of intoxication.
And came to it fleeing the grip of drunkenness.
فَأَبصَرتثthen I saw فيهِin it شادِناًa young gazelle كانَwas جِسمُهُhis body
أَرَقَّmore delicate مِنَthan الماءِthe water الَّذيthat فَوقَهُover it يَجريflows
Then I saw there a young gazelle whose body was
There I saw a young man whose body
more delicate than the water flowing over it.
Was more delicate than the water flowing over him.
لَهُhe had عَرَقٌsweat فيon وَجنَتَيهِhis two cheeks كَأَنَّهُas though it were
He had sweat upon his cheeks, as though it were
He had sweat on his cheeks that looked
dew upon roses, or bubbles upon wine.
Like dew above a rose or bubbles on wine.
فَكُنتُso I was كَأَنّيas though I فيin السَماءِthe sky أَتَيتُهاI came to it
وَقَدand already نَثَرَتscattered مِنهاfrom it النُجومُthe stars عَلىupon البَدرِthe full moon
So I felt as though I had entered the sky,
I was as if in heaven I had reached
and the stars had scattered from it upon the full moon.
Where stars were scattered over the full moon.
