وَذيand one with غُنُجٍcoquettish charm نادَيتُهُI called to him إِذwhen رَأَيتُهُI saw him
وَذي غُنُجٍ نادَيتُهُ إِذ رَأَيتُهُ
وَنورُand the light of الصِباyouth ماthe space بَينَbetween عَينَيهِhis two eyes لامِعُshining
وَنورُ الصِبا ما بَينَ عَينَيهِ لامِعُ
And I called to one with coquettish charm when I saw him,
I called out to him of slender form when I saw him,
While the light of youth shone between his eyes:
And the light of youth shone between his eyes.
أَتَيتَyou came عَلىupon عَقليmy reason فَزَرنيso visit me فَقالَthen he said ليto me
أَتَيتَ عَلى عَقلي فَزَرني فَقالَ لي
عَلىfor كُلِّevery خَيرٍgood thing ياO عَقيلِيُّʿAqīlī مانِعُan obstacle
عَلى كُلِّ خَيرٍ يا عَقيلِيُّ مانِعُ
“You have undone my reason, so visit me.” He said to me:
You have addled my wits, said he to me,
“Every good thing, O ʿAqīlī, has an obstacle.”
And prohibited me from all goodness, my dear companion.
