وَراحٍand wine فيin لِطافَتِهاits delicacy كَحِسّيlike my perception
وَراحٍ في لِطافَتِها كَحِسّي
نَعِمتُI delighted بِشُربِهاin drinking it فيin ديرِa monastery of قسِّa priest
نَعِمتُ بِشُربِها في ديرِ قسِّ
And a wine as subtle as my perception,
The breeze whispers gently like my beloved
I delighted in drinking it in a priest's monastery,
As I enjoy its drink in the monastery bell tower
عَلىto the accompaniment of الناقوسِthe bell إِذاwhen هُوَit عِندَto سَمعيmy hearing
عَلى الناقوسِ إِذا هُوَ عِندَ سَمعي
أَحَبُّdearer إِلَيهِto it مِنthan ضَربٍbeating وَجَسِّand plucking
أَحَبُّ إِلَيهِ مِن ضَربٍ وَجَسِّ
To the sound of the bell, when to my ear it was
It sounds sweeter to my ear
Dearer than beating and plucking.
Than rhythmic beats and clamor
فَيالَكِso, what a ... you are! مِنamong بَناتِdaughters of الكَرَمِthe vine بِكراًa virgin
فَيالَكِ مِن بَناتِ الكَرَمِ بِكراً
تُلائِمُshe matches فيin كَرامَتِهاher nobility لِنَفسيfor my soul
تُلائِمُ في كَرامَتِها لِنَفسي
So, what a virgin you are among the vine's daughters!
O finest wine of the vine's bounty
In her nobility she is a match for my soul.

إِذاwhen اِفتُرِعَتshe was deflowered رَأَيتُI saw لَهاof hers حَباباbubbles
إِذا اِفتُرِعَت رَأَيتُ لَها حَبابا

كَعِقدِ كَواكِبٍ في جيدِ الشَمسِ

إِنَّindeed أَباAbu أَحمَدٍAhmad لَعِلقٌindeed a passive sodomite

خَسيسٌbase فِعلٌdeed مَهينٌabject نَفسِsoul
خَسيسٌ فِعلٌ مَهينٌ نَفسِ
Abu Ahmad is indeed a passive sodomite,

Base in deed, abject in soul.
Of despicable, shameful character
إِذاwhen تِجارُdealers in اللِواطِsodomy جاءَتcame
إِذا تِجارُ اللِواطِ جاءَت
تَطلُبُseeking مِنهُfrom him الشَرىpurchase بِوَكسِat a discount
تَطلُبُ مِنهُ الشَرى بِوَكسِ
When the dealers in sodomy came,
When the peddlers of sodomy arrive
Seeking to buy from him at a discount,
They seek to buy him for a nickel
خَلّىhe desisted عَنِfrom السَومِbargaining وَالتَقَصّيand pressing for more
خَلّى عَنِ السَومِ وَالتَقَصّي
وَباعَهُمand he sold to them بِفَلسِfor a fils (small coin)
وَباعَهُم بِفَلسِ
He abandoned bargaining and pressing for more,
He abandoned bargaining and haggling
And sold himself to them for a fils.
