وَشاعِرٍand a poet مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of النجارِal-Najjar
لاnot يَتَهَدّىfinds his way إِلىto الوَقارِdignity
And a poet from Banu al-Najjar
A poet from the lineage of woodworkers
Finds no path to dignity.
Does not aspire to dignity,
إِنif عُرِّيَتis bared فَيشَةٌa glans (penis head) كَساهاhe clothes it
ماthat which لَيسَdoes not يَكسوهُclothe him غَيرَother than عارِshame
If a glans is bared, he clothes it
If a rag covers him, he is clothed,
With what clothes him in nothing but shame.
Nothing but shame can clothe him,
وَجَنَّهُand concealed him اللَيلُthe night قَطُّever إِلّاexcept
وَأَولَجَand thrust اللَيلَthe night فيinto النارِthe fire
And never did the night conceal him but
The night shelters him from all
He thrust the night into the fire.
But his own dark soul.
