فيin عَينِthe eye of وُدّيmy affection قَبيحاًugly بَعدَafter ماthat حَسُناhe was fair
And a companion was seized by arrogance, so he became
A friend within whom uncouthness crept, to mine eye
Ugly in the eye of my affection after he had been fair.
Grew loathly after beauty's sheen.
ماnot زِلتَyou ceased بِالعَتبِwith reproach أَطويهِI fold him وَأَنشُرَهُand I unfold him
حَتّىuntil غَداbecame لَيِّناًsoft مِنهُin him الَّذيthat which خَشِناwas rough
You did not cease; with reproach I fold him and unfold him,
Still chiding him, I bent him double and outspread
Until what was rough in him became soft.
Till he from harshness softened into grace.
