وَصاحِبٍand a companion صَبَّحَنيgreeted me in the morning
فَألُomen الغِنىwealth مِنfrom طِيَرِهhis auguries
And a companion—there greeted me one morning
A friend wished me good morning,
an omen of wealth from his auguries;
yet I could discern no joy in his voice.
وَقائِلٍand a speaker خَطَمتُهُI bridled him
بِوَثبَةٍwith a leap مِنfrom غِيَرِهhis reversals
and a speaker whom I bridled
And one who reproached me,
with a leap born of his reversals.
I rebutted with an unrelated retort.
فَقُلتُso I said إِذsince لَمnot يُعْدِنيextend to me
مَعروفَهُhis kindness فيin سِيَرِهhis dealings
So I said, since he did not extend to me
So I said, since he did not return
his kindness in his dealings:
my good deed in kind,
لاno خَيرَgood فيمَنin one who لَمnot يَكُنbe
إِخوانُهُhis brothers فيin خِيَرِهhis bounties
“There is no good in one whose
There is no good in one who is not
brothers have no share in his bounty.”
a brother to his friends in their time of need.
