وَأَخٍand a brother نَداهُhis generosity نَدىًdew لَذيذُsweet المَشرَبِthe draught
إِنif فاضَhe overflows فاضَhe overflows بِنائِلٍwith bounty مُستَعذِبِsweet-tasting
And a brother whose generosity is dew, sweet to drink;
A brother who called me with a sweet, delicious call
If he overflows, he overflows with sweet-tasting bounty.
If it overflows, it overflows with fresh, pure water
حُلوٌsweet إِذاwhen اِستَطعَمتَهُyou sample him فيin مَجلِسٍa gathering
مِرٌّbitter إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle ذُقتَهُyou taste him فيin مَوكِبِa procession
Sweet when you sample him in a gathering;
Sweet when you taste it in a gathering
Bitter when you taste him in a procession.
Bitter when you taste it in a caravan
وَأَغَرَّand a radiant man يَنزَعُhe removes دِرعَهُhis armor عَنfrom ضَيغَمٍa lion
وَيُحَلِّand he loosens عِقدَthe knot لِثامِهِhis face-veil عَنfrom كَوكَبِa star
And a radiant man who sheds his armor to reveal a lion,
He provoked me to remove my armor from my body
And loosens his face-veil’s knot to reveal a star.
And to untie the knot of my veil from my star
فَليَبقَso may he live on لِلدُنياfor the world الَّتيwhich ماno مِثلُهُhis equal
فيin مَشرِقٍeast مِنهاof it وَلاnor فيin مَغرِبِwest
So may he live on for the world, which has no equal to him
So let this world that has no equal
In its east, nor in its west.
Remain, neither in its east nor in its west
