أَلاAh! رُبَّmany a خَمّارٍwine-seller طَرَقتُI visited by night تَعَسُّفاًrecklessly
عَلىupon جُرشُعٍa massive mount ساميlofty التَليلِof neck عَمَرَّدِtall and powerful
Ah, many a wine-seller I visited by night, venturing recklessly,
Upon a massive mount, lofty-necked and tall,
وَقَدand already لاحَgleamed لِأَلاءُradiance الصَباحِof dawn كَصارِمٍlike a keen sword
عَلىabove قِمَّةِthe crest of اللَيلِthe night البَهيمِpitch-black مُجَرَّدِunsheathed
While dawn’s radiance gleamed like a keen sword,
Unsheathed above the crest of pitch-black night.
فَقامَso he rose وَقَدand already أَقلَقتُهُI had roused him مِنfrom مِنامِهِhis sleep
إِلىtoward البابِthe door يَمشيwalking كَالَسيرِlike a captive المُقَيَّدِfettered
So he rose—I had roused him from his sleep—
Toward the door, walking like a fettered captive.
