Ah, many a guest I have snared,

While heaven’s neck was rich with pearls.

Then I brought him whatever I had

Of provisions, as noble men do.

And I offered wine that stole his wits,

With saffron perfume’s hue and costly perfumes’ scent.

He said, “Do you have, my lord,

Singing that surpasses the singing of the ancients?”

I said, “Heaven sings for us.”

He said, “You have promised sheer impossibility.

Were the clouds a tongue, why would she

Sing to you with thunder, O man of high distinction?”

I said, “Look closely: you will find her lap

Bearing the instruments of the nights’ singing girls.

If this were not so, why has she displayed

The Pleiades’ rebab and the crescent moon’s bow?”
