Abu al-Surur ibn Jurayj is a young man

who has never, since he came to be, gladdened a friend of his.

He was a Christian; then, when he became

a follower of Muhammad, he forgot his abasement.

And he came to show no regard for a nobleman, nor

    acknowledge his due or merit.

    And self-admiration intoxicated his character,

so its high and low alike were changed.

And his welcome ceased, so no longer

do you hear 'Welcome!' or 'Be at ease!'

And converts to Islam—may they not be safe!—

most of them deserve to be slain.
