لَما تَطَرَّزَ بِالبَنَفسَجِ وَردُهُ
A young gazelle—his cheek held beauty’s charms
A youth whose cheek still bears the scar of sorrow,
when its rose was embroidered with violets.
Yet when arrayed in a robe of violet's hue,
قَدindeed كانَhad عَرَّضَنيbrought me within reach إِلىto إِنصافِهِhis fair treatment

وَأَرادَ مَنفَعَتي بِذَلِكَ وُدُّهُ
He had brought me within reach of his fair treatment,
His beauty seems to me all the brighter for it,
and his affection sought thereby to benefit me.
Seeking my heart as recompense for injury received.

Until, when I awoke to reap union with him,
At first he came soliciting my favor,
by evening his rejection called me to account for it.
But now that he has gained it, spurns my love anew.
