وَلَيلَةِAnd a night هَجرٍof separation بِتُّI spent the night أَرقُبُwatching for صُبحَهاits dawn
وَلَيلَةِ هَجرٍ بِتُّ أَرقُبُ صُبحَها
وَدَمعيَAnd my tears مُنهَلٌّstreaming وَطَرفِيَand my eye ساهِرُwakeful
وَدَمعيَ مُنهَلٌّ وَطَرفِيَ ساهِرُ
Through a night of separation, I stayed awake, watching for its dawn,
And a night of separation I spent watching for its dawn,
My tears streaming while my eye remained wakeful.
And my tears were streaming, and my eye was wakeful.
أَقولُI say لَهاto it إِذاwhen ضِقتُI grew constrained ذَرعاًin endurance بِطولِهاby its length
أَقولُ لَها إِذا ضِقتُ ذَرعاً بِطولِها
أَياO لَيلَةَnight الهِجرانِof separation ماno لَكِfor you آخِرُend
أَيا لَيلَةَ الهِجرانِ ما لَكِ آخِرُ
I say to it, when I can bear its length no more:
I say to it, when I can no longer bear its length:
O night of separation, have you no end?
O night of separation, you have no end!
