فَتىًa youth نَظَمَتstrung عَقداًa necklace عَلَيهِupon him مَناقِبُهhis virtues
فَتىً نَظَمَت عَقداً عَلَيهِ مَناقِبُه
وَصاغَتand fashioned لَهُfor him تاجُa crown الثَناءِof praise مَواهِبُهhis gifts
وَصاغَت لَهُ تاجُ الثَناءِ مَواهِبُه
A youth whose virtues have strung a necklace upon him,
A youth with virtues strung as pearls about his neck,
And whose gifts have fashioned him a crown of praise.
His gifts of praise as crown upon his head.
لَهُfor him فَلَكٌa celestial sphere مِنof رِقَّةِgentleness الخُلقِcharacter دائِرٌrevolving
لَهُ فَلَكٌ مِن رِقَّةِ الخُلقِ دائِرٌ
عَلىaround قاصِديهِthose who seek him وَالعَطاياand the gifts كَواكِبُهits stars
عَلى قاصِديهِ وَالعَطايا كَواكِبُه
His is a celestial sphere of gentle character, revolving
His sphere of gentle manners ever turns
Around those who seek him, and gifts are its stars.
Toward all who come, as planets shine o’erhead.
إِذاif لَمnot تَجِدyou find جوداًgenerosity مِنَof الشَيبِgray hair عارِياًfree
إِذا لَم تَجِد جوداً مِنَ الشَيبِ عارِياً
فَزُرهُthen visit him تَجِدyou will find جوداًgenerosity كَماjust as اِخضَرَّgrew green شارِبُهhis mustache
فَزُرهُ تَجِد جوداً كَما اِخضَرَّ شارِبُه
If you find no generosity free of gray hair,
When aged men hoard stingily their goods,
Then visit him: you will find generosity while his mustache is still green.
Seek out this youth whose fresh beard overflows with generosity.
