لَمdid not يَبكِweep مِثلَlike بُكائيmy weeping مِنهُfrom it يَعقوبُJacob
لَم يَبكِ مِثلَ بُكائي مِنهُ يَعقوبُ
A slender-waisted beauty—her turning away has brought me sorrow.
Her indifference brought me sorrow
Jacob did not weep from it as I have wept.
None wept like Jacob wept but me
لاmay … not أُبتُI return مِنfrom سَفَرِjourney البَلوىthe affliction فَرَجٍrelief
لا أُبتُ مِن سَفَرِ البَلوى فَرَجٍ
إِنif كانَhad قاسىendured الَّذيwhat قاسَيتُI endured أَيّوبُJob
إِن كانَ قاسى الَّذي قاسَيتُ أَيّوبُ
May I not return from affliction’s journey with relief,
I seek no respite from affliction's journey
if Job had endured what I have endured.
If what I suffered Job once suffered too
