فَبَدا لِطَرفي مِنهُ طَرفٌ أَرمَدُ
A graceful gazelle passed by me this morning.
In the early dawn a gazelle passed by me,
Then his inflamed eye appeared to my gaze.
So that to my eyes was revealed a rheumy eye of his,
قَدindeed خالَطَتmingled with ماwhat اِزرَقَّwas blue مِنهُin it حُمرَةٌredness
قَد خالَطَت ما اِزرَقَّ مِنهُ حُمرَةٌ
فَكَأَنَّهُso it is like الكِبريتُsulfur ساعَةَat the moment يوقِدُignites
فَكَأَنَّهُ الكِبريتُ ساعَةَ يوقِدُ
Redness had mingled with the blue in it,
For the blueness of him was mingled with redness,
So it was like sulfur at the moment it ignites.
So that he was like sulphur at the moment of its igniting.
