يا أَيُّها الخِلُّ الَّذي
ماnot زالَceased مَخلوعَstripped of العِذارِthe bridle
ما زالَ مَخلوعَ العِذارِ
O friend, you who
O dear friend, you who
have always been unbridled—
have always been unbridled,
خَزُّsilken cloth الظَلامِthe darkness قَدِalready انِطَوىhas folded up
خَزُّ الظَلامِ قَدِ انِطَوى
فَاِشرَبso drink عَلىupon شُربِfine linen النَهارِthe day
فَاِشرَب عَلى شُربِ النَهارِ
darkness’s brocade has folded away;
the silken cloth of darkness has been folded away;
so drink as day itself takes its draught,
so drink upon the day's fine linen,
راحاًwine يَلوحُgleams حَبابُهاits bubbles
راحاً يَلوحُ حَبابُها
كَالطَلِّlike the dew فَوقَupon الجُلَّنارِthe pomegranate blossoms
كَالطَلِّ فَوقَ الجُلَّنارِ
a wine whose bubbles glimmer
wine whose bubbles gleam
like dew upon pomegranate blossoms;
like dew upon pomegranate blossoms.
فَدُراهُمُfor the silver dirhams النِسرينِthe wild roses قَدindeed
فَدُراهُمُ النِسرينِ قَد
بَهَرَتoutshone دَنانيرَgold dinars البَهارِthe oxeye flowers
بَهَرَت دَنانيرَ البَهارِ
for the wild rose’s silver dirhams have
For the wild roses' silver dirhams have
outshone the bahār’s golden dinars.
