أَسرى لِسُلطانَ الدُموعِ الوارِدِ
And a love-struck man—separation left his eyelids
And a lovesick man—parting left his eyelids
In thrall to the dominion of the coursing tears.
Captive to the oncoming power of tears.

So that his cheeks and his tears seem
So it is as though his cheeks and his tears
Two forms of gold: molten, dripping upon solid.

And a racer among the finest steeds,
And a racer among the finest steeds,
Whose splendor lies in blackness at its deepest.
His horsecloths are the deepest black.

I mounted one of them, easy on the rein,
I rode him, yielding easily to the reins,
Swifter than love’s passage into a heart.
Swifter than love reaching a heart.

His legs discern what is desired,
His legs are alert to what is intended,
As though they were the bloodletter’s lancets.
As though they were the bloodletter’s lancets.
