وَدَّعتُI bade farewell to غِزلانَgazelles المَقاصِرthe secluded chambers
وَاللَيلُwhile the night مُشمَطُّgray-streaked الغَدائِرthe tresses
I bade farewell to the gazelles of the secluded chambers,
while night's tresses were streaked with gray.
فَغَداso it became مَرادُthe course دُموعِناof our tears
مِمّاfrom what جَناهُwrought it البَينُparting سائِرmoving onward
So the course of our tears was set
flowing by what parting had wrought.
لَولاwere it not for نَوىseparation لَمdid not أَجنِهاI bring it about
حَجَرَتbarred عَلىupon الدَمعِthe tears المَحاجِرthe eye sockets
Were it not for a separation I had not brought about,
the eye sockets would have held back the tears.
