لَناours العَطاياthe gifts الَّتيwhich قُدَّتwere cut أَزِمَّتُهاtheir reins
مِنَfrom المَكارِمِnoble virtues وَالتَعجيلُand promptness سائِقُهاtheir driver
Ours are gifts whose reins were cut
We have gifts which their knots were tied
from noble virtues, and promptness is their driver.
With generosity, and their guide is haste,
وَنَحنُand we إِنif نُصِبَتis set up شِطرَنجُthe chessboard of مَعرَكَةٍa battle
رِخاخُهاits rooks وَأَعاديناand our enemies بَياذُقُهاits pawns
And we, if a battle's chessboard is set,
And if the chessboard of battle was set up against us
are its rooks, and our enemies are its pawns.
Its drizzle and our enemies are itsawns,
قَومٌa people نُجومٌstars عَطاياهُمtheir gifts مَغارِبُهاtheir setting places
أَيديthe hands of العُفاةِthose seeking bounty وَأَيديهِمand their hands مَشارِقُهاtheir rising places
A people whose gifts are stars: their setting places
A people whose gifts are their sunsets
are the hands of those seeking bounty, and our people's hands are the stars' rising places.
In the hands of the chaste, and their hands are its dawns.
