وَلَيلَةَand a night لَمnot تَكُwas فيin سِرّيmy innermost thoughts
عُلِّقتُهاI inscribed it فيin ثَبَتِthe record of العُمرِlife
And a night that had not been in my thoughts—
A night that was not in my secret
I inscribed it in the record of my life.
I hung it on the firmness of my life
لَمّاwhen تَبَدّىappeared بِدرُهاits full moon ضاحِكاًsmiling
ضاحَكَنيsmiled with me فيamid عَتبِهِhis reproach بَدريmy full moon
When its full moon appeared, smiling,
When its full moon appeared laughing
my full moon smiled with me amid his reproach.
It made me laugh in the reproach of my full moon
فَلَمso not أَزَلI cease أَقطِفُI pluck زَهرَthe blossoms of الرِضاcontentment
مِنfrom رَوضِهاits garden المَمطورِrained upon بِالغُدرِwith treachery
So I kept plucking the blossoms of contentment
So I did not stop picking the flowers of consent
from its garden, rained upon with treachery,
From its rain-soaked garden with betrayal
حَتّىuntil بَداappeared الصُبحُdawn وَقَدand already سَرَّنيdelighted me
ماwhat تَمَّwas achieved لِلوَصلِfor union عَلىover الهَجرِestrangement
until dawn appeared, and I was gladdened
Until dawn appeared and it delighted me
by what union had achieved over estrangement.
What was completed for union after separation
