وَمُستَهامٍand a man enamored بِشُربِwith drinking الراحِwine باكَرَهاhe drank her early
عَذراءَa virgin فيin جيدِهاher neck طَوقٌa collar مِنَof الذَهَبِgold
And a man enamored of drinking wine drank her at dawn—
Intoxicated with drinking wine at dawn,
a virgin with a collar of gold about her neck.
A maiden with a golden necklace round her neck.
فَغادَرَتهُso she left him صَريعاًprostrate لاno اِنقِيادَobedience لَهُto him
كَأَنَّماas though أَخَذَتshe took بِالثَأرِvengeance لِلعِنَبِfor the grapes
So she left him prostrate, with no control,
She left him laid low, with no will to resist,
as though she had taken vengeance for the grapes.
As though taking vengeance for the grapes.
وَاِستَأسَرَتand she took captive عَقلَهُhis mind حيناًfor a while كَماjust as أُسِرَتshe was imprisoned
فيin دَنِّهاher wine jar حِقَباًfor ages مِنfrom غَيرِwithout ماany سَبَبِreason
And she took his mind captive for a while, just as she was imprisoned
She captivated his mind for a time, as she was
in her wine jar for ages, without any reason.
Held captive in her weakness without cause.
فَحينَso when أَضحىhe became طَليقاًfree أَعقَبَتهُshe gave him afterward عَلىin return for
ماwhat كانَhe had been فيهِin it مِنَof الأَفراحِjoys وَاللَعِبِand play
So when he became free, she gave him, in return for
When at last he was free, what followed for him
the joys and play he had enjoyed,
Were the joys and games that had been.
داءًan illness تَقومُtakes مَقامَthe place of الأَسرِcaptivity سَورَتُهُits fury
دَواؤُهُits cure عَودُreturn ماwhat قَدalready كانَhad been مِنof طَرَبِdelight
an illness whose fury takes the place of captivity;
An illness took the place of captivity, its cure
its cure is the return of his former delight.
The medicine of what had been such delight.
فَقامَso he set about يُذهِبُdriving away ذاكَthat الداءَillness عَنهُfrom him بِهاwith her
ماan emphatic particle بَينَamong زَهرٍblossoms كَياقوتٍlike rubies عَلىupon القُضُبِthe branches
So he set about driving that illness from himself with her,
He set about dispelling that illness with her,
amid blossoms like rubies upon the branches.
Amidst ruby flowers on the branches.
وَظَلَّand he kept يَشرَبُdrinking دُرّاًpearls ذَهَبٌgold
رَطبٌliquid عَلىupon دُرَرٍpearls يَبسِمنَthey smile عَنrevealing ذَهَبِgold
And he kept drinking pearls—gold
He continued drinking a pure draught - gold -
liquid upon pearls that smile, revealing gold.
Ripe fruit on pearls that smiled from the gold.
وَلَيسَand not يَعذِلُهُreproaches him فيfor الراحِwine غَيرُexcept فَتىًa youth
غِرٍّnaive بَغَدرِabout the treachery of صُروفِvicissitudes of الدَهرِtime وَالنُوَبِand calamities
And none reproaches him for wine except a youth
And none would reproach him for the wine except a lad -
naive about the treachery of time's vicissitudes and calamities.
Fickle at the whims of fate and time's changes.
