وَإِنّاand indeed we لَنَخشىcertainly fear الشَيبَgray hair لاnot لِبَياضِهِbecause of its whiteness
وَإِنّا لَنَخشى الشَيبَ لا لِبَياضِهِ
وَلَكِنand yet لِماbecause of what بَعدَafter المَشيبِgraying يَكونُcomes to pass
وَلَكِن لِما بَعدَ المَشيبِ يَكونُ
And indeed we fear gray hair, not for its whiteness,
Though we dread old age, it is not for whiteness
but for what comes after graying.
But for what comes after gray hair.
وَيُحزُنُناand it saddens us أَلّاthat … not نَراهُwe see it فَأَمرُهُso its matter
وَيُحزُنُنا أَلّا نَراهُ فَأَمرُهُ
يَعِزُّis hard عَلَيناfor us تارَةًat times وَيَهونُand is easy
يَعِزُّ عَلَينا تارَةً وَيَهونُ
And it saddens us not to see it; thus the matter of it
It saddens us not to foresee what will come,
is hard for us at times, and at others easy.
For at times it is hard and at times easier.
