And a pool—wonder has come to us

from what flowed of its water and what poured forth.

The marble is revealed through its waters, as

a sky that has donned clouds is unveiled.

Until, when bubbles gather around it,

it shows you its own gleaming stars.

    فَكَيفَ مِن رايِها إِذا لَعِبا

    It laughs at its ducks when they dance;

how much more, then, at its rāy-fish when it plays!

And sometimes it grows ridged with ripples,

if a breeze from the east stirs its flanks.

How lovely its waves when they surge,

and so awaken rapture in our souls!

And how lovely the morning sun, fashioning upon

its shaft gold from its rays!

The roses reach it whenever it trembles

at them, with embers that remain ablaze,

from around a fountain set in place,

whose water’s back has bent with weariness.
