لَقدindeed كُنتَyou used to ياO مَنصورُMansur تَجهَدُstrive فيin نَصريsupporting me
إِذاwhenever جِئتُI came أَستَعديappealing for help إِلَيكَto you عَلىagainst دَهريmy fate
Indeed, you used to strive, O Mansur, to come to my aid,
You, Mansur, strove to help me,
whenever I came appealing to you for help against my fate.
Whenever I came to seek your aid.
فَماso what الأَصلُthe reason فيfor قَطعِending الرُسومِthe customs الَّتيthat جَرَتhad prevailed
وَماand what السِرُّthe secret فيof تَكديرِclouding وَصلِكَyour friendship بِالهَجرِwith estrangement
So what is the reason for ending the customs that had prevailed,
What is the reason to sever ties,
and what is the secret of clouding your friendship with estrangement?
And obscure our bond with estrangement?
أَجِئتُhave I come بِذَنبٍwith a sin أَمor أَتَيتُhave I committed بِزِلَّةٍa misstep
فَأَلقاكَso I face you ماlinking particle بَينَbetween التَنَصُّلُdisclaiming fault وَالعُذرِand apology
Have I come with a sin, or have I committed a misstep,
Did I commit a sin or make a mistake,
that I must face you between denying fault and offering an apology?
That made you waver between disowning and excusing me?
وَإِلّاand if not فَكَمthen how often ضَجَّعَتyou were remiss فيin حِفظِsafeguarding حُرمَتيmy dignity
وَأَهمَلتَand you neglected ماwhat قَدalready كُنتَyou used to تَرعاهُlook after it مِنof أَمريmy affairs
And if not, how often have you been remiss in safeguarding my dignity,
Unless you belied your efforts to guard my dignity,
and neglected the affairs of mine you once looked after?
And neglected what you used to tend to of my affairs.
فَإِنso if كانَis هَذاthis مِنby طَريقِway of مَلالَةٍweariness
فَإِنِّيَthen indeed I مِمَّنam among those who لاnot يَمَلُّtire مِنَof الشُكرِgiving thanks
So if this comes by way of weariness,
If this is due to boredom,
then I am among those who never tire of giving thanks.
Then I am one who does not tire of gratitude.
