May all who defend the homeland be a sacrifice for ours,

And all who refuse to tread it while it lies in ruins.

For life is nothing but to die in honor,

And death is nothing but to live and remain safe.

I pondered time's vicissitudes and found nothing

But the sharp, cleaving sword as a ladder to peace.

And I saw none farther from peace than the man who

Held back, counting safety a prize.

They say the sword's face is always white,

Yet it never shone white without being red with blood.

If repelling evil through counsel is prudent,

Repelling evil with evil has ever been more prudent.

The people of the West ignored every cause

Unless the sword appeared there as its interpreter.

    أَلا عَمَهُ الأَلبابَ أَعمى مِنَ العَمى

    And people who see with their eyes persist in stubborn denial;

Surely, the mind's bewilderment is blinder than blindness.

Edirne, mother of the goldfinch, you who became

A wall and a refuge for the House of Osman,

We would ransom you, abode—how devoted your people!

And [a mother?] to us—how dear and noble!

We inhabited you for long ages, and never ceased

To be, of all the earth's peoples, the kindest to yours.

But when those self-styled reformers came to you,

They brought Hell back into those paradisal gardens.

Say to Ferdinand: you have gone too far in aggression,

And, making claims, have strayed far into error's valley.

And you and your allies attacked through treachery and stealth

Men who were asleep to the schemes you were devising.

Men whom strife with one another had distracted,

So God's decree upon them became inevitable.

This realm was exposed, by you and by them,

To two arrows, each descending as a shower of arrows.

Our Edirne, if the rocks had tongues,

They would have spoken there the day those returning to you came back.

Not a young man but burst into tears,

And not a steed returned without whinnying.

And not a maiden but had her tears checked

By the return of honor's defenders, overflowing like a torrent.

And not a pulpit but put forth leaves of joy,

And upon it stood a speaker chanting melodiously.

And the Chosen One's eyes were gladdened in his tomb,

And Jesus son of Mary congratulated him in Paradise.

    فَهَلّا وَقَد جاءَ الخَميسُ عَرَمرَما

    You hastily seized from us vacant frontier posts;

Then why not, now that a mighty host has come?

An army that, when intentions are sincere, you see

With victory encamped beside it wherever it camps.

Contemplate the mountain plateaus, firmly rooted,

And tell of the encompassing sea, risen in flood.

Its reaches shine with Izzet's radiant brow,

A fierce warrior, dauntless in the heart beneath his ribs.

Every lion among the heroes follows him,

    Smiling when deadly Death frowns.

You see them as lions in battle, mighty lions,

And on the assembly's horizon, full moons and stars.

Who will tell the Bulgarians that into battle

And that all of us, Arabs and Turks, are brothers,

Against them, toward them, seeking to press forward.

And the Arabs and Turks remain one nation,

Of the pure faith, shining white, never to be divided.

And tell them: 'Su'ad has departed'; may

Your heart remain forever enthralled by love for her.

She will remain Ottoman, despite your wishes

And those of our own people who cry out in blame.

Let no temptation make you covet Edirne,

And never open your mouths concerning her.

Edirne has become, for us, second to Mecca,

And the Meriç's waters today resemble Zamzam.

What a day has come amid our afflictions,

Like a brilliant white blaze on a black steed's face!

And the survivors had been weeping; then

Heaven's angels began to share laughter with them all.

The world has ever been joy and sorrow,

And the days have ever been misery and blessings.

May every day after the day of Edirne

Return upon Islam as a feast and a festival.

And it is not difficult for the Lord that we should see

A joy that wipes away that earlier mourning.
