If this novel praise of you is a necklace,
And if this fresh description of you forms a necklace,
its ordered verse came freely from poetry.
it came unbidden from well-strung verse.
إِنَّindeed يَوماًa day بِهِon it الجُلوسُthe enthronement تَجَلّىshone forth
هُوَit يَومٌa day خِدامُهُits servants الأَيّامِthe days
A day on which the accession shone forth
Indeed, the day your enthronement shone forth
is a day all other days must serve.
is a day whose servants are all other days.
كَفَّرَatoned الدَهرُTime فيهِon it عَنfor كُلِّall ماthat جَرَّit brought about
فَلَمso not يَتَّجِهwas directed عَلَيهِat it مَلامِreproach
On it Time atoned for all it had wrought,
On it, Time atoned for all it had brought about,
and no blame could then be laid upon it.
and no reproach could be directed at it.
جاءَcame خِتاماًas an end لِطارِقاتِto the visitations اللَياليthe nights
فَاِختِلافاتِهاso their visits إِلَيناto us لِمامِfleeting
It came as the ending of nighttime assaults,
It came as an end to the calamities of the nights,
so their changes visit us only in passing.
so their visits to us are only fleeting.
لَيسَnot يَلحىis blamed عَلىfor أَواليهِits beginnings عَصرٌan age

No age appears along its first horizons
An age is not blamed for its beginnings
whose ending your high deeds have made so fair.
when your lofty deeds have made its ending sweet.
