لِقَلبيfor my heart ماthat which تَهميpour tears العُيونَthe eyes وَتَأرَقُand lie awake
لِقَلبي ما تَهمي العُيونَ وَتَأرَقُ
وَلِلعَينِand for the eye ماthat which يُبلىis worn down الفُؤادُthe heart وَيُرهِقُand is burdened
وَلِلعَينِ ما يُبلى الفُؤادُ وَيُرهِقُ
For my heart the eyes pour tears and lie awake;
My heart cares not for glances though they torment and consume,
And for the eye the heart is worn down and burdened.
While to the eye what wearies the heart and makes it faint.
وَماand not كُنتُI was مِمَّنamong those who يُرهِقُoverwhelms العِشقَlove قَلبَهُhis heart

وَلَكِن مَن يَدري فُنونُكَ يَعشَقُ
Nor was I one whose heart love overwhelms,
I was not one whose love exhausted his heart,
But whoever knows your arts falls in love.
But who knows the ways your charm makes one fall in love.
وَماand not كُنتُI was مِمَّنamong those who يَرشُقُstrikes السَهمَthe arrow لَحظَهُhis gaze

Nor was I one whose gaze an arrow strikes,
I was not one whose gaze was pierced by the arrow of your glance,
And thus falls in love; yet your reed pen is more alluring.
To swoon for that, but to watch you is more wondrous.
أُصِبتُI was struck بِهِby it كُلَّall القُلوبِthe hearts وَأَنَّهُand indeed it

I was struck by it, as were all hearts; indeed, it
It struck all hearts yet it
Showers them with arrows before even nocking them.
Sprinkled them with nobility before it left.

أَسيرُكَyour captive فيin مَيدانِthe arena فَضلِكَof your excellence مُطلَقُfree
أَسيرُكَ في مَيدانِ فَضلِكَ مُطلَقُ
I left mankind captive to your love; yet
I left people captives of your love, but I
Your captive is free in the arena of your excellence.
Am your captive in the field of your excellence, free.

فَأَنتَ لَهُم حَقٌّ رَقيقٌ وَمُعتَقُ
At your side, you enslaved them through tenderness of nature;
With you, you stole gentleness from nature,
So you are, truly, their bondsman and their liberator.
So you have the right to be tender and to emancipate.

With those meanings I drew their hearts,
I attracted their hearts with these meanings,
And, by God, that refinement enthralled them.
And my addiction, by God, is that elegance.

Speech that, when you deliver it before a gathering,
Speech, when you utter it among a gathering,
Becomes from you like fresh pearls strung in order.
Becomes from you like moist pearls, well-arranged.

Upon it is the divine light's touch
That all but sparkles throughout its reaches.
That almost glitters at its edges.

Pools of kindness and springs of wisdom
The fountains of wit and the springs of wisdom
Continue to water the garden of knowledge abundantly.
Shade the garden of knowledge pouring.

Through them the branch of eloquence stays fresh through the night,
The branch of eloquence spends the night thriving
Leafy, towering above the growth of lucid speech.
And ascending the growth of rhetoric, climbing.

Peace upon the face of Imam Muhammad,
Greetings to the face of the Imam Muhammad,
A countenance upon which the water of life shimmers.
Revived by it the water of life murmuring.

God be praised for the sea's pearls—Muhammad's pearls—
And to God belong the pearls of the sea, the pearls of Muhammad,
With which the brow of learning has been crowned.
From it, branches of knowledge spread out.

And his sublime morals, if I wished to describe them
Even if I do not wish, inspire me, and I speak.
And if I did not, they would inspire and make me speak.

An imam, victorious in the contest of reason and tradition,
An Imam winning in the qualities of intellect and scripture,
Ever first to the goals, a sage and discerning scholar.
Preceding the goals of a fulfilled wise man.

Whenever he steps forward in the arena of excellence, they fall short
If he rose in the arena of virtue, its environs would shorten
Around his reach—[the remaining wording is unclear in the supplied text].
Before the extent of his splendor racing ahead.

ظَهيرٌ وَلِلبَطَلانِ مُردٍ وَمَزهَقُ
Mankind's orator, revealing the truth through truth,
The preacher of the world with truth for truth manifesting,
Its champion, and the destroyer and annihilator of falsehood.
A supporter and for falsehood, declining and perishing, an adversary.

When he rises upon the pulpits, speaking decisively,
When he stood above the pulpits, judging,
What misguidance does he not erase and obliterate?
What misguidance then does not erase and obliterate?

Mankind sways as it listens to his address,
The world sways upon hearing his sermon
And you marvel that the wooden planks do not put forth leaves.
And is amazed that the wooden poles do not sprout leaves.

For he never stood openly proclaiming the truth of the upright faith,
When he stood for the pure Hanafi rite arguing,
While thought's unity remained unshattered.
And for thought a refuge not torn apart.

His is the renowned pen, whose ink puts to shame
He has the famed pen that sheds its ink
Gold dust, when the ink is poured onto a writing sheet.
With blades, when unsheathed, unsheathing.

The wonders of my Master are in Muhammad His servant,
And your Lord gives what He wills and grants sustenance.
And your Lord gives what He wills and sustains.

Is there, my Master, any virtue in this world
Among these people that does not befit you best?
Except that you are most befitting of it?

And I hope that, in fulfilling a duty,
And in hope that, in fulfilling an obligation,
I may quiet a heart that, without it, has kept fluttering.
My heart alongside it ceases to pulsate.

If someone like me receives a word from your speech
If one like me obtained a word from your speech
That honors him, then he is the fortunate, favored one.
Honoring him, then he is fortunate, successful.
