    O Jamal of Islam—and Islam

has been turned by reproach from the love of beauty.

One must live as you do; otherwise,

a young man's life is forbidden him.

    دونَهُ كُلَّ ما نَرى أَوهامُ

    This is how glory may truly exist on earth;

beside it, all we see is illusion.

Ambitions beneath which the stars have their abode,

and a resolve before which the days fall short,

    hurling at hardships a resolve

that, were it revealed, would shatter mountains.

Such qualities you possess, O man of the

    earth—what, then, can speech convey?

You have never ceased winning praise, until

every praise has a claim upon you.

You are a single man in all you encompass, yet

in strength of heart you are a vast army.

Yours is the soul of angels, with the majesty of the

spheres and the bounty of one whose hands are rain clouds.

    أَدبَرَ الظُلمَ مِنهُما وَالظَلامُ

    Yours is a lofty nature and a handsome face;

injustice and darkness have fled from them both.

And symbols filled with truths, every one,

and branches of knowledge, banners above the heights,

and a pen pouring forth like rain,

and an intellect like fire ablaze,

and meanings that, were they revealed to lifeless matter,

longing and passion for them would stir it.

They bewildered every discerning mind, until

it was said: “Beyond doubt, they are inspiration.”

All this Jamal has encompassed, and more.

O beauty of the world, peace be upon you.

Every living soul who has not emulated your excellence—

all the hours of his life are sins.

So let the stars rise high through you, and let

Adam, not Shem, boast of your exalted rank.

And let us answer what you call us to; otherwise,

    may humiliation befall our souls.

    طَلقاً لَيسَ تَخلُقُ الآنامُ

    Every soul is charged with seeking success;

    humankind is not created unbound.

And shameful, O soul, is your saying: “This

is beyond my resolve, and a power none can subdue.”

God has fashioned wondrous things among His servants,

and they are bound to undertake them.

God suffices us as guardian, yet

let us say such words while we stand on our feet.

    لا نَنالُ العُلى وَنَحنُ نِيامُ

    Before attaining the heights lie hills and hollows;

we do not attain the heights while asleep.

We seek glory from others, yet

'Isam was not ennobled by other 'Isams.

O age that has brought every wonder,

what a day was ours, with abasement imposed on us!

Bring whatever strange thing you wish, O age,

and have your way, for you are not to blame.

Truly, a cause its own people abandoned,

after they had broken their fast and fasted for it—

so they became as you made them; nor would

my God have changed them, had they remained steadfast.

O Jamal of Islam, I am a man among

those whose throats, by God, have tightened—tightened.

In vain does time deal us a deathblow:

a wound causes no pain to a dead man.

Time is never, for a day, without a

lesson; yet minds have been paralyzed.

A condition whose like the days

are, by my life, too barren to bring to an end.

From you we hope, my master, O Jamal al-

Din, for ropes to be joined though they are rotten strands.

You are for Muslims, in their faith, a

proof that others are rightly bound to acknowledge.

    نَحنُ لَولاكَ في الوَرى أَيتامُ

    Turn your soul toward us as much as you can;

without you, we are orphans among mankind.

    سَيِّدَ أَنتَ وَالزَمانُ غُلامُ

    We never doubted that you would attain your hopes;

you are the master, and time a servant boy.

We did not marvel at the Persians when, by the favor of the

state today, you were surrounded with veneration.

More radiant today, O Muhammad, and more dazzling—

you are a full moon in the two Easts.

    And overcome obstacles, and make

    everything unattainable attainable.

    Your well-guided judgment cuts through

time, which the keen sword cannot cleave.

About you, poetry comes in ordered lines,

spontaneously, and pens flow of their own accord.

This is an arena the masters

of rhyme should shun, for I am the lion.

So dower what I have brought as a bride today with acceptance,

O beauty, with whom I am enraptured!

May time serve the gate of your glory with

devotion, as long as endings follow beginnings.
