لا تَخَل كُنتَ في الفَجيعَةِ فَرداً

لا تَخَل كُنتَ في الفَجيعَةِ فَرداً

كُلُّ قَلبٍ لِجَرحِ قَلبِكَ دامِ

كُلُّ قَلبٍ لِجَرحِ قَلبِكَ دامِ

Do not think you were alone in the calamity;

Do not despair though you were alone in anguish,

every heart bleeds for the wound in your heart.

Every heart bleeds for the wounds of your heart.

إِن أَزالوكَ عَن رِآسَةِ حُكمٍ

إِن أَزالوكَ عَن رِآسَةِ حُكمٍ

لَم تَزَل صَدرَ دَولَةِ الأَفهامِ

لَم تَزَل صَدرَ دَولَةِ الأَفهامِ

If they removed you from the leadership of a government,

If they dismissed you from leadership,

you remain the head of the realm of minds.

You remain foremost in the realm of minds.

في ضِفافِ الأُردُنِّ يَجري عَلى الغَو

في ضِفافِ الأُردُنِّ يَجري عَلى الغَو

رِ كَساقٍ يُديرُ كَأسَ المَدامِ

رِ كَساقٍ يُديرُ كَأسَ المَدامِ

Along the Jordan’s banks, it flows across the Ghawr,

On the banks of Jordan flows a stream

like a cupbearer passing round the cup of wine.

With shanks that swirl a cup of wine.

وَتَباشيرٌ لِلرَبيعِ أَضاءَت

وَتَباشيرٌ لِلرَبيعِ أَضاءَت

فيي عِرارٍ مِن زَهرِهِ وَبِشامِ

فيي عِرارٍ مِن زَهرِهِ وَبِشامِ

And the first signs of spring shone

Harbingers of spring have illuminated

in its ʿarār blossoms and balsam.

A barren land with flowers and fragrance.

وَسَلامي عَلى الخَليلِ وَشَوقي

وَسَلامي عَلى الخَليلِ وَشَوقي

وَعَلى حافِظِ بَديعِ النِظامِ

وَعَلى حافِظِ بَديعِ النِظامِ

And my greetings to Khalil and Shawqi,

My greetings to al-Khalil and al-Shawqi

and to Hafiz, of wondrous verse—

And the keeper of the sublime system.

الثُرَيّا الَّتي قَدِمتُ عَلَيها

الثُرَيّا الَّتي قَدِمتُ عَلَيها

بِضَئيلِ السُهى وَشِبهِ القَتامِ

بِضَئيلِ السُهى وَشِبهِ القَتامِ

the Pleiades, to which I came

Al-Thurayya that I came upon

with faint Suha and a semblance of dust.

With little provisions and near darkness.
