God bless you—a man devoted to finely fashioned thanks
for acknowledging a right made binding by your lofty worth,

and a proud-spirited nobleman who counts as a favor
the recollection of a benefactor's merit or kindness.
رَأىhe saw كَرَماًgenerosity مِنّيfrom me تَذَكَّرَrecalling قَولَهُhis words

He deemed my recalling his verse an act of generosity,
thereby revealing the loftiest and noblest character.
وَلَوand if كانَwere يَدريto know فاضلa man of merit قَدرthe worth of نَفسِهِhimself

And if a man of merit knew his own worth,
he would deem his praise a duty for every Muslim.
أَيَعجَبُdoes he marvel مَنat تَنويهِpraise by مِثليone like me بِمِثلِهِof one like him
لَعَمريby my life الَّذيthe one who قَدindeed شَقَّopened فيthrough شِعرِهِhis poetry فَميmy mouth
Does he marvel that one like me should extol one like him?
By my life, it was he who opened my mouth through his poetry.
وَمَهماand whatever يَكُنthere may be مِنof أَعجَمِan inarticulate person فَبِفَضلِهِthen through his excellence

And however inarticulate a man may be, through his excellence,
every tongue-tied man appears a Thaqafi among humankind.
إِذاwhen مَطَرَshowers الغَيثُthe rain الرِياضَthe gardens بِوابِلٍwith a downpour
فَأَيُّthen what يَدٍcredit لِلطائِرِfor the bird المُتَرَنِّمِthat warbles
When rain showers the gardens with a downpour,
then what credit belongs to the warbling bird?
إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) تَصَبَّتplays the coquette بِالعَميدِwith the lovesick man صَباحَةًbeauty

بِوَجهٍthrough a face فَماthen what فَضلُmerit العَميدِthe lovesick man المُتَيَّمِenslaved by love
When beauty plays the coquette with a lovesick man
through a face, what credit has that man, enslaved by love?
وَهَلand does anyone يُنكِرُdeny الإِحسانَkindness إِلّاexcept لِئامَةًout of baseness
وَيُنكِرُand denies حُسناًbeauty غَيرَother than مِنone whose طَرفِهِhis eye عَميis blind
And who denies kindness except out of baseness,
or denies beauty unless his eyes are blind?
وَهَلand is there فيin شُهودِbeholding الشَمسِthe sun أَدنىthe least مُزيَةٍdistinction

And is there the least distinction in beholding the sun,
when its light has appeared without concealment?
رُوَيدَكَtake your time لاdo not تُكثِرُheap up لِدَهرِكَagainst your age تُهمَةًaccusations

وَلاand do not تَيأسَنever despair مِنof أَهلِهِits people بِالتَوَهُّمِon suspicion
Gently now: do not heap accusations upon your age,
nor despair of its people on mere suspicion.
فَماfor not زالَhas ceased مَنone who يَدريrecognizes الجَميلَkindness وَلَمand would not يَكُنbe

For there are still those who recognize kindness and would not
be deterred in truth by the blame of faultfinders.
وَأَنتَand you الَّذيthe one who لَوif أَنصَفَacted justly الدَهرَtime لَمnot يَكُنwould be

And you—were time just, there would be
no one but you in the foremost seat of eminence.
جَمَعتَyou gathered العُلىglory مِنfrom تِلدِهاits inherited portion وَطَريفِهاand its newly acquired portion
فَجاءَتso it became كَعُقدٍlike a necklace فيin ثَناكَyour praise مُنَظَّمِwell-strung
You gathered glory, both inherited and newly won,
so it became a well-strung necklace in your praise.
غَدَتhas become خَطَّتيmy course إِمّاeither يَراعٍa reed pen وَمِخذَمِand a keen-edged sword
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you تَطِبُare skilled فيwith يَراعٍa reed pen وَمَخذَمِand a keen-edged sword
My course has become a choice between reed pen and keen-edged sword,
and you are skilled with reed pen and keen-edged sword.
وَلَمand never أَرَhave I seen كَفّاًa hand مِثلَlike كَفِّكَyour hand أَحسَنتَserved well

I have seen no hand like yours that has served
glory so well, making ink flow alongside blood.
جَمَعَتهُماyou united them both جَمعَthe uniting of القَديرِa master بِكَفِّهِin his hand

إِلىalongside مُحتَدٍa lineage سامَlofty إِلىto المَجدِglory يَنتَميtraces its descent
You united them both with a master's hand,
alongside a lofty lineage that traces its descent to glory.
وَلَوand if كانَwere يُرقىto raise المَرءَa man ماwhat يَستَحِقُّهُhe deserves it
إِذاًthen لَبَلَغتyou would surely have reached النيراتِthe shining stars بِسَلمِby a ladder
And if a man's deserts could raise him,
then you would surely have reached the shining stars by a ladder.
وَأَنتَand you الَّذيthe one who ياO اِبنَson of الكِرامِthe noble أَعدَتهاyou restored it
لَأَفصَحَto greater eloquence مِنthan عَهدِthe age of النَواسيal-Nuwasi وَمَسلَمِand Muslim
And you, son of noble men, have restored it
to greater eloquence than in the age of al-Nuwasi and Muslim.
وَأَنشَرَتand you revived مَيتَthe dead body of الشِعرِpoetry بَعدَafter مَصيرِهِits becoming
لِأَعظَمَto a greater degree نَثراًof scattering مِنthan رُفاتٍcrumbled remains وَأَعظَمِand bones
And you revived dead poetry after it had come
to lie more scattered than crumbled remains and bones.
وَأشهَدَand I testify ماnot فيamong الناسِpeople مِنany مُتَأَخِّرٍone of later times
يُدانيكَcomes near you فيهِin it لاno وَلاnor مُتَقَدِّمِone of earlier times
And I bear witness: no one among the later generations
approaches you in it—no, nor anyone of earlier times.
وَلَوand if شُعَراءِthe poets of الدَهرِall time تَعَرَّضَpresented themselves جُملَةًall together

And were all the poets of all time to present themselves together,
from every tribe, whether dwelling in Najd or Tihama,
لَأَبصَرتَyou would surely see شَخصُthe figure of البُحتِرِيِّal-Buhturi مِنكَcompared with you بُحتُراshort-statured

وَخَلقُand the form of أَبيAbu (father of) تَمّامٍTammam غَيرَnot مُتَمِّمِcomplete
you would see al-Buhturi's figure dwarfed beside yours,
and Abu Tammam's form incomplete.
لَكَyours are الآبِداتُthe deathless verses الآنِساتُthe delightful ones الَّتيthat نَأَتranged far

Yours are the deathless, delightful verses that have traveled afar,
and made poetry's 'Ukaz forgotten—indeed, every festival.
لَكُمhow often أَسَهَرتَyou kept awake جَفنَthe eyelid of الرُواةِthe reciters وَخالَفتَand ran counter to

How often you have kept the reciters' eyelids awake, while
your far-roaming, sleepless verses ran counter to your fortunes.
شَغَفتَyou enthralled بِهاwith them طِفلاًa child فَأَروىso I recite بَديعاًwondrous verse
وَلَمand never أَروِhave I quenched مِنfrom وَجديmy passion بِهاfor them نارُthe fire of مُضرِمِa kindler
With them you enthralled me as a child; so I recite wonders,
yet I have not quenched the kindled fire of my passion for them.
وَلاand no عَجَبَwonder أَنّيthat I أَحِنُّI yearn صَبابَةًwith passionate longing

فَيَسريfor ... travels الهَوىlove بِالقَولِthrough speech لِلمُتَكَلِّمِto the speaker
And no wonder that I yearn with passionate longing,
for love travels through words to their speaker.
أَفيis there, on كُلِّevery يَومٍday فيكَfor you وَجدٌlonging كَأَنَّهُas though it

Is there each day such longing for you, as though it
folded a rib of mine over a branding iron's fire?
أُحَمِّلُI charge ريحَthe wind of الهِندِIndia كُلَّevery تَحِيَّةٍgreeting
فَكَمfor how many مِنof صَباًan east wind مِنهاfrom it عَلَيهاupon it مُسَلَّمِgreeted

I charge the wind of India with every greeting,
for many an east wind from there has greetings bestowed upon it.
وَقَدand indeed طالَماoften حَدَثَتI spoke to نَفسيmy soul وَعاقَنيand hindered me

And often I have spoken to my soul, but was held back
by its wavering between 'Advance!' and 'Hold back!'
حَلَفتُI swore بِماby what lies بَينَbetween الحَطيمِal-Hatim وَزَمزَمِand Zamzam

I swore by what lies between al-Hatim and Zamzam,
and by the radiant garden, with a swearer's oath:
لِأَلفَيتُI have indeed found عِنديin my judgment دَوسُtreading مُشتَجَرِthe tangled mass of القَناspears

I have indeed found that treading through tangled spears
and my plunging into a pool brimming with spear-thrusts

are less fearsome to my heart in battle,
and easier than that exalted presence.
وَهَبand suppose أَنَّنيthat I بازٍa falcon قَدindeed اِنقَضَّhas swooped down أَشهُبٌgray

And grant that I am a gray falcon that has swooped down:
would a falcon aspire to encounter a lion?
وَلَكِنَّbut ليfor me مِنfrom عَفوِthe indulgence of مَولايَmy lord ساتِراًa covering

Yet in my lord's indulgence I have a covering,
so here I am, passing the night sheltered in him from him.

O Mahmoud Sami, if time be treacherous,
and an ill-omened bird's augury has long weighed upon you,
فَماfor not زالَتِhave ceased الأَيّامُthe days بُؤساًhardship وَأَنعُماand blessings

for the days have ever brought both hardship and blessings,
and misery's allotted stay is the same as pleasure's.

And were it not for thirst, no drink would delight, nor would
honey taste sweet to you but for colocynth's bitterness.

a brocade with warp and weft woven in your praise.
