A remnant of glory was bidden farewell the day he was bidden farewell,

and the time had come for hopes of honor to be severed.

The days did not announce his death without enfolding

a portion of the East in his death as well.

    يَلوحُ لَنا أَنَّ مُزنَها لَيسَ مُقَطَّعا

    The storm of time has indeed showered calamities upon us;

it seems to us that their rainclouds are unceasing.

Glory be to Him who sent death in its many guises,

and, by my life, brought both multitude and individual to their death.

When the army of ill fortune raids a people,

how fitting that their misfortunes should take many forms!

Until today, I had not thought that our age,

when it did wrong, would seek no room for an excuse.

Was all it had destroyed of every aim not enough for it,

all the meaning it had spoiled and the refuge it had laid waste?

And the straitness of calamity—let sorrow weigh heavily,

and high glory turn back with its nose-tip severed.

Time exalts and reveals the mourners—my tears [wording unclear].

Lost to me [wording unclear]; let your age mourn whom it has mourned.

Far be it—no written lines for such a calamity,

when the one who perished was Amin, borne to his burial.

Our loved ones, if patience is called manliness,

I am a youth who seeks to lament and grieve.

I leave you endurance's merit, a whole store of patience,

and tell my eye today: spare no tears.

And mix the goblets of tears with blood, as cupbearer,

for every drink is adorned by being mixed.

I count it treachery toward Amin

if I do not drain your brimming cup.

My affection for the dear ones was never wasted,

nor was my heart barren of a brotherly bond.

I bore a trust for him within my ribs,

which, had the lofty mountains borne it, would have made them lean and split.

I gave him from myself a friendship so pure that, had it

lent its clarity to the nights, they would have grown clear at their watering place.

I have always watched over him as a friend, despite the distance,

and before me, the stars of the horizon, like me, kept watch.

If this earth has caused its full moon to set,

    may those stars never shine as they rise;

nor may those lightnings flash, for extinguished are

the lightnings of hopes that glittered yesterday.

Does the darkness of the brooding calamity not prevent

every radiant thing from shining and blazing forth?

    وَلَيسَ يُراعُ الناسُ إِلّا لِأَروَعا

    Today he died whose loss terrified humankind;

people are stricken only for a splendid man.

    وَلَكِنَّهُ كانَ المَصارِعُ أَجمَعا

    In him, death did not bring about one man's fall;

rather, it encompassed all deaths together.

It struck reason, learning, resolve, and vigor,

and affirmed the principles and the inviolable pledge.

Not one trait among the noble virtues remained,

nor any noble course, but shared his resting place.

    Had intercession availed against death,

his peerless qualities would have saved him through their pleading,

and noble praise would have defended his soul,

and made him immortal, had immortality held any hope.

But death's summoner accepts no bribes,

and will meet none more precious or exalted than he.

It hunted him down suddenly with treachery's arm,

in the blink of an eye, or faster still.

A calamity that shook the lands when its news spread,

leaving no pillar of greatness unshaken.

It humbled the refusal of tears in every dry eye,

until no rebellious tear remained but yielded willingly.

Among calamities I have seen none whose raid reached farther,

nor any that struck closer to the hearts of humankind.

That evening, no one could master a tear,

nor the chest's deep sighs, save through pretense.

That evening the people returned drunken—but only

with what the grapevine had never produced.

That evening the calamity left no self-possession,

nor any resolve in the sorrowful, but squandered it.

That evening the people buried a sun, and it grew dark—

the sun, for its sake—beyond even Joshua's power to restore it.

And 'Amin of glory' was said; one hand struck against the other,

and many a lip spent the night beside a finger.

If the Nile valley was made to feel his loss,

there was no mountain in al-Sham that did not shake.

A noble man: in describing him, the word 'noble' falls short,

when applied loosely to people called noble.

He sought the path of goodness alone, as though

from cradle to grave he had come only to bring benefit.

His nature was gentle and his soul proud,

and his qualities were lovely, surpassing a flourishing garden.

And truthful pens, whose allegiance returns

to the finest and most gifted of those endowed with writing.

And after Abd Allah, it had been hoped

that this root had not vanished without putting forth a branch.

So it persisted until it made the branch follow its root—

time, leading the noble away one after another.

The loss of the full moon has always pained people,

and on the pitch-dark night it wounds and pains them more.

Though death's hands may enfold him, never have

the returning nights effaced his fragrant remembrance.

And though the shrouds are white and spotless,

the whiteness of his remembrance is purer still.

May your journey be in God's keeping; it is

the journey of a resolute youth who pressed on and hurried.

You reached the pool ahead of others, like a thirsty drinker

hard pressed, who feared the crowd and rushed.

You challenged death, your adversary, without fear,

and the words of the testimony of faith were armor enough for you.

I call to you, hoping for no reply; the time is past—

alas for my heart!—when I could speak and you could listen.

Have you left any mouth smiling after your departure,

or an eye that hoped to sleep and slumber?

If the dwellers of the thickets knew who lay buried [reading uncertain],

they would coo only in lament for you.

We hoped for you for the homelands, when they most needed

someone to uplift them, their dwellings most desolate.

But the world would not grant it, and we knew no faithfulness,

nor did it see fit to do anything but beguile and deceive.

What is this abode, for whose courtyard

one [unclear verb] and longs to be drawn toward it and to seek it?

A little enjoyment, then shelter in a grave—

so what can a human being hope to enjoy?
