I say to my speech today: if you are my helper,

then ascend the paths of heaven by a ladder,

and string rare pearls from precious speech

that bring the horizon's Sirius down into a reciter's verse.

If I do not give noble deeds their due

of gratitude in the ordered thread of verse,

then may no heart of mine be enthralled by noble deeds,

nor my forefathers be noble, nor my lineage be pure,

nor may I be raised to a rank of distinction

through which I gain a meeting with the noble Muhammad.

And I recount his exalted glory—and the mention of Muhammad

is the sweetest speech uttered after the testimony of faith.

A noble man—upon meeting him I praised Time,

and whoever meets good fortune praises the journey.

Nor is it strange that there yearned to kiss his palm,

from afar, a soul that touches the star with its hand.

And a countenance stirred the master of tender verse to yearn for him—

by your life, it kindles longing in a heart of stone.

So take her, O splendor of kingship, a graceful maiden,

swaying like the bending bough of a bān tree.

And indeed, when I offer the noble one my praises,

I attest to the truth of my words, unrefuted.

And whoever seeks an end to grasping your true essence

finds a goal that, as it draws him toward union, sends him farther away.

Otherwise, I have not sought to attain a goal

through my verse, nor is composing odes my purpose.
