مَقامُكُyour standing ياO أباAbu (father of) حَفصٍHafs عَظيمُgreat
مَقامُكُ يا أبا حَفصٍ عَظيمُ
وقَدرُكَand your worth فوقَabove ماwhat تَصِلُreach النُّجومُthe stars
وقَدرُكَ فوقَ ما تَصِلُ النُّجومُ
Your standing, O Abu Hafs, is great.
Your status, O Abu Hafs, is sublime
And your worth is higher than the stars can reach.
And your worth is beyond what stars can climb
وكيفand how وأنَّكَand indeed you are الرَّجلُthe man المُفَدَّىthe one others would sacrifice for
وكيف وأنَّكَ الرَّجلُ المُفَدَّى
وأنكَand you are ماجدٌnoble نَدبٌgallant كَريمgenerous
وأنكَ ماجدٌ نَدبٌ كَريم
And how could it be otherwise, when you are the man others would sacrifice for,
How could it not, for you are the ransomed man
And you are noble, gallant, and generous?
And you, Majid, are the noble, called upon
فياso O ابنَson of الأكرمينَthe noblest أباًfather وأُمّاًand mother
فيا ابنَ الأكرمينَ أباً وأُمّاً
وياand O فردَpeerless one المَحاسنِthe virtues فيamong البرَاياhumankind
ويا فردَ المَحاسنِ في البرَايا
So, O son of the noblest father and mother,
O son of the most honorable parents
And O you, peerless in virtues among humankind,
O lone possessor of beauty in the lands
فخارُكَyour glory ليسnot يدرِكُهattains it لَئيمُa base man
فخارُكَ ليس يدرِكُه لَئيمُ
وياand O مَنone who مَجدُهhis glory شاعَspread انتِشاراًwidely
ويا مَن مَجدُه شاعَ انتِشاراً
Your glory no base man can attain.
Your pride cannot be fathomed by the ignoble
And O you whose glory has spread far and wide,
O you whose glory has spread far and wide
مَنالُكَattaining your rank لاnot يَرومُهseeks it مَنwhoever يَرومُaspires
مَنالُكَ لا يَرومُه مَن يَرومُ
وياand O ربَّmaster of المَكَارِمِnoble deeds والمَزاياand fine qualities
ويا ربَّ المَكَارِمِ والمَزايا
No aspirant aspires to attain your rank.
Your feats are not sought by those who seek
And O master of noble deeds and fine qualities,
O lord of generosity and grace
مديحُكَpraise of you فيهin it يحلُوgrows sweet ليto me النَّظيمُcrafted verse
مديحُكَ فيه يحلُو لي النَّظيمُ
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs فريدُpeerless in الوقتِthe age عقلاًin intellect
أبو حفصٍ فريدُ الوقتِ عقلاً
In praising you, verse grows sweet to me.
Praising you makes verse sweet to compose
Abu Hafs is peerless in his age in intellect,
Abu Hafs, unique in his time for intellect
وآداباًand in refinement ورأيُهand his judgment مُستقيمُsound
وآداباً ورأيُه مُستقيمُ
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs عديمُwithout المِثلِan equal جوداًin generosity
أبو حفصٍ عديمُ المِثلِ جوداً
And in refinement; his judgment is sound.
And manners, his views ever straight
Abu Hafs is without equal in generosity,
Abu Hafs, peerless in generosity
وأخلاقاًand in character لهhe has ذهنٌa mind سليمُsound
وأخلاقاً له ذهنٌ سليمُ
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs تَفَرَّدstands alone فيin كَمالٍperfection
أبو حفصٍ تَفَرَّد في كَمالٍ
And in character; he has a sound mind.
And conduct, his mind is sound and sedate
Abu Hafs stands alone in perfection,
Abu Hafs excelled in perfection
كبَدرِlike a full moon التَّمِّat its fullest تُظهِرُهreveal it الغُيومُthe clouds
كبَدرِ التَّمِّ تُظهِرُه الغُيومُ
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) أمaims at شيئاًsomething
أبو حفصٍ إذا ما أم شيئاً
Like a full moon revealed by the clouds.
Like a full moon revealed from behind clouds
Abu Hafs, whenever he aims at something,
Abu Hafs, if he wills something
ورامهand seeks it لاnot يفوتهُeludes him ماwhat يرومُhe seeks
ورامه لا يفوتهُ ما يرومُ
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs لهhe has قلمٌa pen بديعٌwondrous
أبو حفصٍ له قلمٌ بديعٌ
And seeks it, what he seeks does not elude him.
He attains all he seeks
Abu Hafs has a wondrous pen.
Abu Hafs, his pen is eloquent
يرَصِّعُbejewels باليراعِwith the reed pen لهfor him طرُوساًpages
يرَصِّعُ باليراعِ له طرُوساً
كثوبِlike the robe of الأُفقِthe horizon رَصَّعَهbejeweled it النُّجومُthe stars
كثوبِ الأُفقِ رَصَّعَه النُّجومُ
He bejewels pages for himself with the reed pen,
Adorning sheets with pearls in rows
Like the horizon's robe, bejeweled by the stars.
Like a robe of the horizon, studded with stars
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs لهhe has فكرٌa mind إذاwhen ماever (emphatic)
أبو حفصٍ له فكرٌ إذا ما
ففيthen in المُستَشكِلاتِperplexing matters لهhe has انتباهٌalertness
ففي المُستَشكِلاتِ له انتباهٌ
Abu Hafs has a mind—whenever...
Abu Hafs, his thoughts, whenever
Then he is attentive to perplexing matters.
Puzzled, are filled with insight
أبوAbu (father of) حفصٍHafs كريمٌgenerous فيin بلادٍlands
أبو حفصٍ كريمٌ في بلادٍ
أقلُّfewer منthan القليلِthe few بهاin them الكَريمُthe generous person
أقلُّ من القليلِ بها الكَريمُ
Abu Hafs is generous in lands
Abu Hafs, generous in lands
Where the generous are rarer than rare.
Where few can be called generous
