غِبتَyou went away عنيfrom me فكدتُso I nearly شوقاwith longing أذُوبُmelt
غِبتَ عني فكدتُ شوقا أذُوبُ
ومنand from الشَّوقِlonging قدmay تذُوبُmelt القلوبhearts
ومن الشَّوقِ قد تذُوبُ القلوب
You went away from me, and I nearly melted with longing.
You were away from me, and I almost melted with yearning
And hearts may melt from longing.
And from yearning, hearts can melt away
طابَwas sweet عيشٌlife بالقُربِin nearness منكto you زمَاناfor a time
طابَ عيشٌ بالقُربِ منك زمَانا
كيفَhow بالبُعدِin being far عنكَfrom you عيشِيmy life يَطِيبُbecomes sweet
كيفَ بالبُعدِ عنكَ عيشِي يَطِيبُ
Life was sweet near you for a time.
Life was good in your proximity for a while
How can my life be sweet far from you?
How can my life be good when you are far away?
غِبتَyou went away عنِّيfrom me وأنتَand you are إنسَانُpupil عَينِيof my eye
غِبتَ عنِّي وأنتَ إنسَانُ عَينِي
أيُّwhat نُورٍlight أراهI see it حِينَwhen تَغيبُyou are absent
أيُّ نُورٍ أراه حِينَ تَغيبُ
You went away from me, though you are the pupil of my eye.
You were away from me, yet you are the light of my eyes
What light can I see when you are absent?
What light can I see when you disappear?
وإذاand when مَاemphatic particle ألمَّbefell بيupon me داءُan illness هَمٍّof worry
وإذا مَا ألمَّ بي داءُ هَمٍّ
واكتِئابٍand dejection فأنتَthen you are نعمَexcellent الطَّبِيبُthe physician
واكتِئابٍ فأنتَ نعمَ الطَّبِيبُ
And whenever I am afflicted with the sickness of worry
And whenever I am afflicted by the illness of worries
And dejection, you are an excellent physician.
And depression, you are the best doctor
