    Woe, then woe, to al-Bayyaz!

His foreparts have been turned back upon the hindparts.

Dismissal is deadly poison to al-Bayyaz.

And in dismissal lies al-Bayyaz's death.

They said, 'You were dismissed'; I said, 'That was by consent.'

This consent is a riddle among riddles.

When those who oppress the people exceed all bounds,

The Lord of the people requites them by dismissing them.

    قَد أبدلُوكَ حقيقةً بِمَجازِ

    After dismissal, they granted you the title of deputy;

They have given you metaphor in place of reality.

You were not one to be spared humiliation,

Let alone accorded reverence and honor.

But it is the age of scoundrels, so you do not see

A scoundrel in it who is not distinguished.

Indeed, when a tyrant's oppression grows outrageous,

His steps are swift to reach their end.

Vacate the offices for the men suited to them,

Men of competence, to whom honor is due.

    فاحكُم علَى الأبوَامِ والأبوَاز

    O al-Bayyaz, the open expanse is yours;

So rule over the owls and hawks.

As for returning as a deputy, it is permitted

For you to do so; and know that it is a mockery.
