شهادةٌa testimony صدرَتwas issued منfrom أعظَمِthe greatest of الدُّولِnations
There is no hero on earth like al-Tihami—
Like heroes on earth, there is no equal
A testimony issued by the greatest of nations.
A testimony issued from the greatest states
هذيthis فرنساFrance وذاand this وسامُthe medal of عِزَّتِهاher honor
وأنتَand you أنتyou yourself عديمُwithout النِّدِّa peer والمَثَلِand an equal
This is France, and this the medal of her honor,
While you are matchless and peerless
And you—you are without peer or equal.
And here is the dean of France who came celebrating
وذاand this عميدُthe chief of فرنساFrance جاءَcame مُحتَفِلاًcelebrating
أعظِمhow great بمُحتَفَلٍis one celebrated بهin his honor ومُحتَفِلِand one celebrating
And this is France's chief, come to celebrate.
The greatest celebration of the one being celebrated
How great the honoree and the celebrant!
Medals of glory have kissed your beloved chest
قدindeed قَبَّلتhave kissed صدرَكَyour breast المحبوبَbeloved أوسمةٌmedals
شَتَّىof various kinds فذاقتso they tasted شَهِىَّthe sweetness of اللَّثمِkissing والقُبَلِand kisses
Medals have kissed your beloved breast,
Of different kinds, tasting the sweetness of kisses
Of many kinds, savoring the sweetness of kissing and kisses.
The medal of war was jealous of passion
فغارَthen it grew jealous منهاof them وسامُthe medal of الحربِwar منout of شَغَفٍpassion
يَقولُit says ماليwhat is wrong with me لهذاfor this العِزِّhonor لمnot أنَلِI attain
Then the war medal grew jealous of them out of passion,
Saying why didn't I attain this honor
Saying, “Why have I not attained this honor?”
So it came hastily, burning with longing
فجاءَso it came مُستَبِقاًracing ahead بِالشَّوقِwith longing مُحترِقاburning
للصَّدرِto the breast مُعتَنقاًembracing منfrom شِدَّةthe intensity of ِالجَذَلِdelight
So it came racing ahead, burning with longing,
Embracing the chest tightly, intensely attracted
Embracing the breast in overwhelming delight.
How could it not when all the traits of glory
وكيفand how لاnot وصفاتُand the qualities of المجدِglory أجمَعُهاall of them
تَقَسَّمَتwere apportioned فيكَin you بينbetween القَولِspeech والعَمَلِand action
And how could it not, when all the qualities of glory
Are divided in you between words and deeds
Are apportioned in you between word and deed?
Languages praised you unanimously
وردَّدَتand echoed مدحَكَyour praise اللُّغاتُthe languages قاطِبَةًwithout exception
وسارَand spread إسمُكَyour name بينamong الناسِpeople كالمَثَلِlike a proverb
And every language has echoed your praise,
And your name moved among people as a proverb
And your name has spread among people like a proverb.
You who if appears smiling to the people

You are the one who, when he appears to people smiling,
Revives them with your radiance like rainfall
Gives life with his countenance, like a cloud pouring rain.
And if appears angry, the heart panics
وإنand if بَداhe appeared غاضِباًangry فالقَلبُthen the heart فيin وَجَلٍdread

And when he appears angry, the heart is in dread,
The eyes confused, and the body paralyzed
And the gaze is bewildered, and the body paralyzed.
The haughty Atlas bowed down humbly
الأطلسُthe Atlas المُشمَخِرُّtowering قدindeed حَناbowed قُنَناًpeaks

The towering Atlas has bowed its peaks,
Asking for ages, but when you came did not wait
That had made demands for centuries, yet did not tower when you came.
Don't you see it when

Do you not see it when
Your voice echoes between the plains and hills
Your voice rings between the lower slope and the summits?
No rebels in their rebellion

Never has it approached rebels in their rebellion
Except you scattered them on the flatlands and mountains
Without scattering them across plain and mountain.
O you whose rank ascended the heavens of glory
ياO منone who سمَتrose high بسَماءin the sky of المَجدِglory رُتبتُهُhis rank
وصارَand became ذِكرُهُmention of him فيin الأفواهِmouths كالعَسَلِlike honey
O you whose rank has soared in glory's sky,
And whose mention became as sweet as honey in mouths
And whose mention on people's lips has become like honey,
This glory and the ultimate glory
المَجدُglory هذاthis وذاand this للمجدِfor glory غايتُهُits utmost goal
مجدٌa glory عظيمٌmighty جرىflowed فيin سابقprimordial الأزلbeginningless eternity
This is glory, and this is glory's utmost goal:
Great glory that flowed since the ancient times
A mighty glory that flowed in primordial eternity.
So we ask Allah to keep you in bounty
فنسألso we ask اللهGod أنthat يبقيكَHe keep you فيin نعمٍblessings

So we ask God to keep you amid blessings,
Adorned through His grace with jewels and robes
Walking proudly, through His bounty, in jewels and robes.
And here it is, of excellent poetry, singing
وهاكَهاand take her منfrom بديعِexquisite الشعرpoetry غانيةa beauty
وطفاءَlong-lashed وجنتهاher cheek تحمرُّreddens منfrom خَجَلِshyness
And take her, a beauty of exquisite verse,
Its fruits blushing from shyness
Long-lashed, her cheek reddening with shyness.
Poetry is what the soul heard and was delighted
الشعرُpoetry ماwhat سمعتهheard it الروحُthe soul وانتعشتand was refreshed
منهfrom it وصارتand became بهthrough it كالشاربِlike a drinker الثملِintoxicated
Poetry is what the soul hears, drawing new life
Becoming through it like one drunk
From it and becoming through it like an intoxicated drinker.
And poetry is what settled in the listener’s ear
والشعرand poetry ماwhat قدindeed حلاbecame sweet فيin أذنthe ear of سامعهits listener
ثمthen استعادهُhe requested it again لاnot يخشىhe fears منof المللboredom
And poetry is what has sounded sweet in its listener's ear,
Then he recalled it, fearing no boredom
Then he asks to hear it again, unafraid of boredom.
If this is so, then poetry is non-existent
إنif كانwas هذاthis فإنthen indeed الشعرَpoetry منعدمٌnonexistent
وليسand it does not يأتيcome إذاif لمnot يأتit comes منfrom قبليmy side
If this is so, then poetry is nonexistent,
And does not come if it did not come from me
And does not come unless it comes from me,
Especially in praise of you, hoping

Especially in praise of you, as I hope
From you acceptance, O best of acceptors
For your acceptance of it, O finest of recipients.
